Soakaway
A hole sited well away from the building which is filled with brick rubble or stones to prevent the side walls caving in. The purpose of a soakaway is to receive surface water and they are often used in country areas where there is a lack of sufficient sewerage pipes. Soakaways should only be used in areas which will allow the water to percolate into the surrounding ground. The size and distance form the building is usually specified by the local authourity who must be notified of their use.
